Huckabee on Top of McCain's VP List

Source: Huckabee Tops McCain VP List

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 10:46 AM

Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is at the top of the list of John McCain’s possible running mates, according to a top McCain fundraiser with ties to his inner circle.

Economic conservatives are likely to oppose the choice of Huckabee as McCain’s vice presidential candidate, given the populist tone of his campaign and his tax record as governor of Arkansas.

But in his “Capital Commerce” column for U.S. News & World Report, James Pethokoukis points to the fundraiser’s disclosure and cites several factors that could make Huckabee a strong asset for McCain.

For one thing, the former Baptist minister is a great campaigner who could garner support in the South among social conservatives and at the same time appeal to working-class voters in the crucial states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Huckabee would also appeal to many more voters on a “he cares about me” level than millionaire investor and possible vice presidential choice Mitt Romney, especially given all the turmoil on Wall Street this year.

Finally, even economic conservative who might hesitate to back Huckabee would certainly favor him over the threat of Obamanomics and higher taxes across the board.

I really hope McCain picks someone else. Aside from his stand on the issues, Huckabee doesn't look, sound or act presidential, far as I can tell. He may make a good comedian but not a vice president or president.

I'm not a fan of Huckabee either, but doesn't he kind of remind you of Carter? Carter didn't look, sound or act very presidential either.

Hmmm, I never thought of Carter. Carter seems more serious to me than Huckleberry, although Carter was feckless and maybe even dangerous with his incompetence, not to mention some of his views. Gov. Huckabee just strikes me as a jokester. I don't take him seriously and it's hard to picture him going head-to-head with other leaders.

Huck was on Meet the press this morning. And defended McCain until he was blue in the face. He did his best to try to convince people that McCain isn't the same as George Bush.
BLAH BLAH BLAH.

If he had any sence at all, he wouldn't even be attempting to be McCain VP. If McCain gets the nomination, the Democrats will have a landslide this year.
McCain is aligned so closely with Bush that there is no way anyone is goig to look at him any differently than Bush.
One thing Huck said that was so very very true. That if "McCain was to go riding down main street on an elephant, the elephants legs would be shot out from under it"

McCain seems to be intent on sabotaging his own election. Now he is pissing off the religious right again:

McCain Rebuffs Dobson: Will Evangelicals Bolt?

Sunday, May 18, 2008 6:05 PM

By: Phil Brennan

Sen. John McCain's campaign has so far turned a deaf ear to invitations to meet with politically powerful evangelical leader Dr. James Dobson at his Focus on the Family headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., raising the possibility that the nation's sizeable evangelical bloc will sit out the presidential race in November.

The move would all but assuring the election of Sen. Barack Obama, columnist Robert Novak argues in a recent column.

Noting that Dobson has indicated he can't support McCain for president, Novak writes that Dobson's opposition to McCain "reflects continued resistance to the prospective presidential nominee among Christian conservatives who are unhappy with McCain's current positions on stem-cell research, immigration and global warming, not to mention his past sponsorship of campaign-finance reform."

But conservatives are surprised that despite the differences between McCain and some key conservatives, he hasn't responded to their olive branches and sought meetings.

As a result of their dissatisfaction, Novak reports that many of Dobson's followers "are looking beyond 2008 to seek a new leader of the conservative movement for the 2012 election."

In another column, Novak questions Mike Huckabee's announced support of McCain. Though Huckabee has been unequivoval in his backing of McCain, telling Tim Russert on "Meet the Press" Sunday that he thought McCain was his nominee during their primary fight if could not clinch the nomination, Novak has heard otherwise, citing sources that suggests Huckabee has secretly allied himself with the bitter-end anti-McCain opposition.

Novak writes that while that seems hardly credible given Huckabee's very public support of McCain, his critics point out that during Huckabee's 10 years as Arkansas governor he proved "all too capable of playing a double game."

Novak writes that McCain could not be where he is today had not Huckabee mobilized born-again voters to upset Mitt Romney in the Iowa caucuses, and that "all efforts by Romney to overtake McCain in conservative Southern state primaries were stifled by Huckabee's success in those contests."

Moreover, even though Huckabee lost no time in endorsing McCain once he clinched the nomination evangelical community sources dispute the veracity of Huckabee's support.

One unidentified source long active in Christian politics told Novak many evangelicals have embraced the concept that an Obama presidency "might be what the American people deserve."

That, writes Novak "fits what has largely been a fringe position among evangelicals, that the pain of an Obama presidency is in keeping with the Bible's prophecy."

You keep your friends close. And your enemies closer.

McCain is going to destroy the republican party.
Why? Ok since you asked. ( I know, you already know). But here's my take.

Little by little, making statements like he did today about Obama having unconditional talks with so-called enemies. (who aren't enemies to most Americans, only McCain & Bush). And then Obama coming back and making it clear that every good president has always talked to the enemy.

"That kind of isolationism is what started WWI" (isn't that what he told Ron Paul during a debate) That statement, to many Americans, only solidifies that fact that McCain is just another 4 years of Bush.

Therefore. The people who don't really consider themselves a republican or democrat are going to vote democrat. (and that's alot of people)
And for the constitution party religious nuts (I'm not leaning constitution party anymore), Those republicans and the rest of the religious right, will not vote for McCain because of his nit-picks with religious leaders.

So what do you have left? The 25% who still support George Bush.

Now lets throw in a few facts:
McCains Votes so far.
Cuacus votes: 58,855
Primary Votes: 8,801,581

Obama's Votes so far.
Primary Votes: 14,040,116
Caucus Votes: 390,238

Now these numbers are just Obama's and McCain. I realise there are other factors involved. Such as the other republican voters may vote for McCain in the general election. And the Clinton and other democrat voters will vote for Obama. But, when you add up all the democrats votes agains the republican votes, it's over 4 to one for the democrats.
Which leaves McCain, only having aboput 25% of the votes. Leaving a landslide victory for the Democrats.

The Republican Party should have learned from the 2006 election that the public is sick of the Republicans' war. Apparently, they didn't learn as all the Republican candidates except Ron Paul were and are continuing to promote the war and trying to start up a new one with Iran. Maybe what is needed is for the Republicans to lose big this year. Maybe then, they'll finally wake up.

I agree Herb. But, a good spankin is exactly what they are going to get. It may even get so bad, that the GOP gets abandoned by member of it's own party. (Considering the amount of Republicans that are not running for re-election this year and the ones that dropped out last time. aka Frist, etc etc) This would be a good time for people like Ron Paul and those other conservative republicans to either create a national conservative party, or turn independent (which I would more support) and tell the media and the American people, that "The Republican party has left them". Otherwise, what Ron Paul said during the debates, "The party has lost their way" will be forgotten. If the party is going to change, and stay alive, then republicans are going to have to change.
But I see, most republicans, holding onto Bush/McCains shirt tails, and sinking with the ship.

Personally, I would like to see an end to both parties.

On another note. When the GOP gets their well-deserved spanking, that means the Democrats socialistic ideas and plans will go into effect. A national health care plan (which we can't afford), more wars in the middle east (which is always been the democrat way, and we can't afford), more foreign intervention and subsidies (which we can't afford), higher taxes, and illegal immigration will be turned into amnesty (which we can't afford), will all go into effect soon after November of this year.

Considering all that has been done in the past few years with both parties, I don't see anything I just stated as being far-fetched.

From Politico blog:

Washington County, OR
It's raining a bit here in Washington County, which is traditionally the swing between Portland Metro and the rest of the state. I'll be walking my precinct in a little bit for GOTV, with a list (short) of Dem folks who according to the Secretary of State's database haven't turned in their ballots yet. On the ground? The clear runaway winner of the battle of the lawn signs is Ron Paul, who has signs everywhere. I wonder if that will translate into a significant (whatever significant means) protest vote against McCain. Could be the under the radar story of what is shaping up to be a predictable twenty point Obama victory on the Dem side.
