I first heard the term "progressives" used in connection with liberals by Dukakis. The "L" word has become so unpopular. Liberals know that the vast majority of American voters aren't liberals, so they have to run a stealth campaign in order to get elected. That's why Hillary when told by a black reporter that her health care program was nothing but socialized medicine, she got angry and said it wasn't socialized medicine. I'd like to ask her what is the difference between a progressive and a liberal and the difference between socialized medicine and national health care. Liberalism by any other name is still liberalism and socialized medicine by any other name is still socialized medicine. Once Hillary wins the nomination, she will start calling herself a centrist to try to appeal to more independents and centrist Democrats.

It just struck me as really odd to suddenly see this word used as a euphemism for "liberal," and to see it everywhere! I honestly don't remember seeing it in that context before a few months ago. It seems so out of place.
