Forbidden No Atheists During Election Cycle

While some soldiers find God when in a foxhole, and others find him at times of dire need, it appears that the democrats find him every election cycle.

The top tiers professed their faith at a Soujourners forum broadcast by CNN and insist that the religious vote is up for grabs. These are the same people that are for everything immoral proposed by the secular far left.

Admit it, you top tier hypocrits! Your religious advisors are your campaign handlers and your gods are Rasmussen and Zogby.

I read your link. Those sound like nice stories for those guys to tell on Oprah, but totally irrelevent. When I'm not feeling lazy and I go to Sunday School, I never hear anything that has any possible connection to being a politician. As far as I can tell, separation of church and state is mostly a lesson learned from Jesus and it is not a lesson learned from atheists.

I would love to get a good political rant in Sunday School, yet opportunities to apply modern politics to the teachings of Christ are rare and mostly inappropriate.

Power comes from God and it is given to the individual.
Power comes from the individual and is given to government.
Therefore, government is a lesser entity than any individual and any individual is lesser than God. None of those guys would verbalize this viewpoint, and that is why I believe they are quite possibly pandering. I think they believe that government (not God) gives power to individuals.

I'm an athiest.. are you saying I have no power because I don't believe in your god? What about people who aren't Christians?

Your power comes from wherever you believe it comes from. PWC believes that man's power comes from God. Being an atheist, you don't. We have the freedom to believe or not believe as we want and to express those beliefs.

I wish atheists didn't take every expression of belief as a personal afront. I would more likely vote for an intelligent, upstanding, and moral atheist than I would a supposed Christian who only finds God every four years.

David Yeah, what are your views about Hillary? I'll come out of the closet here and risk hatred upon myself by stating that I am also an atheist. There is a whole spectrum of different viewpoints out there that are against Hillary. We need to stand together and make sure she doesn't make it back into the White House.

Herb, presidential politics don't really interest me that much. I ended up here via StumbleUpon and thought I'd stop by and express a few ideological opinions, which is why I'm in General Discussion instead of the anti-Clinton campaign pages. But for my vote, Clinton is just a DLC corporatist that would continue privatizing American public institutions and would support free trade agreements like Bill and Gore did in their hay day, resulting in that giant sucking sound of jobs leaving the country that Ross Perot once referred to.

nohilbilly- I ask because I've seen the opinion expressed in a conservative circle I used to roam in that since god grants power and rights, if you don't believe in god, you don't really diserve either. PWC's comment sounded like more of the same to me.

It's a shame that in order to get elected in America you almost have to publically express your faith in the Christian god; it is almost as if you have to get on your knees for prayer in order to pass the de facto litmus test we have here. I appreciate that you'd extend the olive branch and vote for a non-thiest that you agreed with on a policy level, nohillbilly, but I think you're in the vast minority since so many Americans believe this country was founded as a Christian nation simply because the majority of us are Christians, and that public office must be occupied by a man or woman of God that will enact that god's will.

The problem isn't the candidates expressing their faith in public instead of just private, the problem is that politics and religion have been mixed in this country, and logic, science, and reason are suffering as a result of it. Every time any candidate publically carries on about their faith, be it Christian, Mormon, Islam, whatever-- they backhand good government. Keep it in your church, folks.

Herb, you Godless heathen.... Just Kidding!!!

Why on earth would anybody hate you just because you're an atheist?

People don't hate atheists because they don't believe in God, most people have a problem with atheists because they want to infringe on the rights of believers. Does it really bother them when they see a cross on a hill, the ten commandments in a courthouse, or In God We Trust on currency, or are they just trying to make a point.

The country was founded on Christian principles by people who wanted freedom to worship as they pleased. I truly believe that seperation of church and state was meant to keep government out of religion, not vice versa.

nohilbilly:

I'm sure you've read this article from the [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This No Hillary For President Forum Link. America ever ratified, but I'd like present it just to hear your thoughts on it:

Quote:
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion;as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries
The Puritans that originally populated the northeast of the country were the ones who came to America for religious reasons. They left Great Britian because they couldn't force everyone to respect the Christian god and base the law of government on the Bible. The rest of the original WASP population were middle class and the men were promised acres of land based on how many people they brought with them-- be they wives, children, other relatives, or endentured servents. My point is that the vast majority of the original settlers were pretty much here on business, not because they seeked to impose their religion on society.

1) Cross on a hill. Don't really care at all about that, as long as my tax dollars didn't put it there.

2) Ten Commandmends in Courthouse. This one is two fold-- my tax dollars most likely went into the construction of that monument. Second, it is symbolic that it is somehow a Christian court that follows Christian principles. If I'm an athiest or a mulsim or a jew, how could I possibly feel as though I'm getting my fair day in court if the word of the Christian God is hovering over the judge's head? It may not be true that I'm getting any different treatment, but in that intimidating environment, it can't help.

3) In God We Trust on currency - Ironically, the American government at the time that In God We Trust was placed on money was only trying to (as you said of disgruntled secularists)make a point. We were trying to prove that we weren't like the godless Soviets, and one of the ways we did that was by putting the phrase on our currency, another way was by putting "...under God" in our pledge to the flag, instead of "One nation, indivisible" as it was originally written, and as I say it.

"The Puritans that originally populated the northeast of the country were the ones who came to America for religious reasons. They left Great Britian because they couldn't force everyone to respect the Christian god and base the law of government on the Bible. "

They actually came here because they were persecuted in England. The Church of England was the established church in England. Unfortunately, when the Puritans gained power in Massachusetts, they persecuted others.

The 1st Amendment states that "Congress shall pass no law respecting the establishment of religion." The Founders did intend a wedge of separation between church and state. They were only too familiar with the history of religious war in Great Britain with power changing hands from the Anglicans to the Catholics to Comstock and the Protestants and back to the Anglicans. They didn't want that pattern to be repeated in America. Nobody should be made to feel like second class citizens in this country. This is what happens when the Government imprints "In God We Trust" on our coins and places "The Ten Commanments" in court houses and puts up nativity scenes. George Bush Sr. even made the absurd comment that atheists can't be patriots and he wasn't even sure that they could even be considered citizens.

People have a right to vote for whomever they want. At this time , no open atheist can be elected to any major office because atheists are the most discriminated against people in this country. I'm glad that you're open minded enough to vote for one, nohil-billy, but most people aren't. That's their right ofcourse.
