| Syz, first let me say that I believe you are very intolerant of anybody who believes in anything other than atheism. It's no wonder that you thought everyone was going to hate you when you declared your atheism on another thread.
Agnostics are not people who don't believe in God but refuse to commit to atheism "just in case," like many people believe. I believe that there is something out there but I don't know what or who it is. Could it be the God that the Jews, Christians, and Muslims all worship or could there be a high God with dominion over lesser gods ala JRR Tolkien's "The Silmarilion."
When God gave Moses the Ten Commandments he started off by saying, I am the Lord your God, you shall not have any other gods before me. The fact that he stressed that he was your (the Jewish) God and mentioned other gods is enough to put things in a whole new light for me. I've also wondered who Cain married after he killed Abel and moved away since there should have been only three people left at the time. These things put alot of doubt in my mind but who am I to dis the Bible? Hell (OOPS) Heck, it's been a best seller for years.
I read a book once called "Modern Science And The Genesis Record" which explained how incredibly hard it is to accurately translate the bible as there are so many different meanings for even the simplest words. To me, iffy translation leads to even iffier interpretation. So as I can't say that I believe it, who am I to say that it's not real. Even the big bang theory needs a couple of marbles to get the whole thing going. Where might they have come from? I don't know, do you.
According to Webster, an agnostic is a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as a god or God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable. That best describes how I feel. By the way, gutless atheist was not amongst the definitions.
Therefore, I'm perfectly comfortable with anybody, whatever they believe, and you will rarely find me arguing religion pro or con. |
